Do you have an indomitable spirit?

This is a question that I want you to ask yourself. Do you have what it takes to have an indomitable spirit? Have you experienced the necessary elements in life to fit in this category? How well can you define this? I will try my best by giving some examples because we all have different perspectives and experiences in life.

Although my first ten years of school taught me about the knowledge of a wide variety of topics, I learned discipline, respect, and commitment from my schoolmates, teachers and parents. Comparatively, sports taught me about passion, trust, confidence, team work, and entertainment.

The values that I accumulated in life were the result of my interactions with the world. I can’t say that these interactions were always the best decision at the moment. I made mistakes along the way to really understand the consequences of my actions. When my dad didn’t agree with my behavior, he was clear to let me know my place. What he never said in words, it was clearly expressed by a well-deserved spank.

Fast forward in the future as a Taekwondo student, I am learning about the balance of mind and body to become a stronger individual with a positive mindset.  The five tenets of Taekwondo are: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit. How can I define this last term without involving the other four?

Indomitable represents the determination to avoid being subdued by anything or anyone despite the circumstances, while spirit is associated with our soul, will, positive attitude, and feelings. Having an indomitable spirit is a unique characteristic of a person that provides the strength to face each day with a smile. I persevere to be happy on a long term basis.

It’s not easy to accomplish this, especially when we feel sick or when we are depressed. We need to surround ourselves with the best set of conditions to flourish. My motivation is fueled by my family, my friends and all the people I talk to in a daily basis because they make me believe in a world filled with hope for a greater tomorrow.

My spirit is filled with a positive attitude because my connection with the universe is strong.

I am from Colombia and I am very proud to be from that beautiful country. One of my great passions is life because I have walked this path by sharing it with amazing people. People that have taught me to see the world in a very different way. Extraordinary individuals have showed me what I have never could discover by myself. I am an eager reader of science, poetry, politics, and music (yes, the meaning and composition of song lyrics). I have a great appreciation for art, languages, and the expression of everyone's perspective seen from the lens of a camera. I love Astronomy and one day I will be in space. I am a Research Scientist in Corrosion Engineering and writing is a great way for me to tell the world how I feel.
