A Letter to My Ex: Thank you

I have recently ended my almost five-year relationship with my long distance boyfriend. After being together for so long it comes as a shock to me and dealing with the emotions is like being on a roller coaster ride to be completely honest.

Like anyone going through a breakup,  I am sitting in my wheelchair trying to reflect on everything I should have done or what I should have done to keep the relationship alive. I realize that there was nothing I could have done to prevent what was in the cards for our destiny.

Instead of dwelling on what I could have done differently to stay in the relationship that wasn’t meant to be I decided I wanted to write my ex-boyfriend a thank you letter for all the things he taught me throughout our five-year relationship. Although it didn’t work out between us,  I  will always love him and carry the memories we shared in my heart.

As I reflect on the memories we shared together I sit here in the clouds trying to put the pieces all together. Here it goes:

Dear Austin,

I have been staring at this blank screen for a couple nights now while trying to comprehend everything that had to happen between us. One second I’m okay, the next second I’m listening to our favorite song on repeat while writing. I go to face time you but realize that’s a thing of the past now.

Since I can’t hear your sweet southern charming voice anymore, I figured I write you this letter to you to thank you for what you taught me in the five years we were together  I want to thank you for being my driving force and my biggest inspiration – that you will forever be.

I want to thank you for making me smile when my days were grey and full of rain and thunder, and I was having pain throughout my whole left side of my body. Thank you for being my best friend.

Thank you for being the one that understood me. Thank you for showing me a new meaning of love. Thank you for allowing me on your journey. Thank you for loving me the best way you could despite the distance.

Thank you for being the warrior I know you are and will always be to me. I carry the love you had for me as a love that will never leave my heart for as long as I live – you were my first love.

Thank you for being so goofy and hilarious when I needed a good laugh with your stuffed animals like History Bear. I love the way you would be so sweet and thoughtful just because you could be. Whoever your wife ends up being will be so lucky to have such a strong bright young man like you.

Thank you for being so strong despite the obstacles you had to face. If it were me, I would have gone crazy, but you didn’t. You smiled through it all, and that’s a lesson I’ll always carry.

I thank you for giving me the greatest gift…your heart.
