6 Songs That Remind Me Of Who I Am

Music has always been a huge part of my life. In fact, my favorite genre of music is country music, since it helps me to escape from my reality of being a disabled woman in society. Country music, in general, helps me forget about everything that’s going on with my health.

Music has also helped me with my anxiety when my cerebral palsy gets to be too much for me. Here are 6 songs that often remind me of who I’m as a person and how far I’ve come in life.

So, without further ado, let’s dive in!

1. “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson

“Stronger” reminds me of my strength throughout my life with cerebral palsy. There were many times during my childhood when society stereotyped me or people bullied me. Many times, I came home from school and cried. Listening to this song remindsme how being bullied made me stronger, and it didn’t kill me.

2. “Part Of That World” by Jodi Benson

I don’t know how many times I’ve heard “Part Of That World” and not cried. The message behind Part Of That World is so powerful for a woman like me who wants to be able to fit into society. I know I’ll never be able to be part of society without being labeled, but this song reminds me that I’m not alone.

3. “Scars To Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara

“Scars” reminds me that there is nothing wrong with my scars. My scars are my story, and I’m beautiful just as I am. If people don’t like me, so be it! I’m Tylia, I have cerebral palsy and scars, and I’m me.

4. “Outside Looking In” by Jordan Pruitt

I first heard this song when I was watching “Read It And Weep.” I fell in love with the lyrics of “Outside Looking In” because at the time, I was used to being the outcast in school. I was the girl with buck teeth who used a wheelchair and wore leg braces, so I relate to this song a lot.

5. “Austin” by Blake Shelton  ‘

“Austin” reminds me of my choice to always fight for what I love and what I want in life. The song is a story of a cowboy who calls his first love until she answers… and he finally wins her heart over. This song reminds me of myself because I’ve always been the type to fight for what I want and who I love until I achieve my dreams.

6. “Stand By Me” by Mickey Gilley

This song makes my heart melt. “Stand By Me” reminds me of myself because I’m a hopeless romantic and an old soul. I dream of marrying a man who will stand by me forever.
